Apprenticeship
The traditional route into the tattoo industry. A new tattooist learns under the mentorship of an established artist, usually working in their studio for 1-3 years.
In detail
Apprenticeships typically involve significant time learning to draw, understanding machine setup and maintenance, skin anatomy, hygiene protocols, and tattooing practice on synthetic skin before working on humans. Respected apprenticeships are competitive and unpaid or low-paid.
