Based on rating, reviews, styles and availability
Nearly 1,300 five-star reviews since 2006-that's not hype, that's consistency. Santa María's longevity and ultra-high rating suggest a studio that hasn't coasted on its reputation but continues to deliver. The focus on Japanese, geometric, and blackwork is telling: these aren't forgiving styles, and the fact that the studio has built its foundation here means real technical discipline. Walk-ins are accepted, but the volume of reviews and the precision-work specialisation suggest booking ahead will get you better results. A solid choice if you want meticulous linework and don't need hand-holding through the process.
About the studio
Santa María Studio has been a fixture in Mexico City's tattoo landscape since 2006, anchoring itself as a destination for clients seeking precision and artistic depth. The studio draws a discerning clientele who appreciate technical mastery over trend-chasing, and its longevity speaks to the trust it has built across nearly two decades of work in the city.
The studio specialises in Japanese, geometric, and blackwork tattoos-three disciplines that demand exactitude and a clear eye for line, form, and negative space. Whether you're drawn to the flowing, narrative quality of Japanese imagery, the mathematical satisfaction of geometric designs, or the bold contrast of blackwork, the team here has refined their craft across these specific languages. This focus means your artist will have deep experience with the particular challenges and aesthetics of your chosen style.
First-time visitors should know that Santa María welcomes walk-ins, which removes friction from the initial visit. That said, given the studio's reputation and the nature of detailed work across these styles, booking a consultation ahead of time is wise-it ensures you'll discuss your vision properly and secure an artist whose portfolio resonates with you. The studio operates in Mexico City, where Spanish is the primary language; English proficiency may vary, so consider bringing reference images to bridge any gaps.
With over 1,200 five-star reviews, Santa María has earned its standing as one of Mexico City's most trusted tattoo studios. Its combination of specialised expertise, professional service, and nearly two decades of consistent work makes it a natural first choice for anyone in the city seeking Japanese, geometric, or blackwork tattoos.

The great customer service started immediately via text while scheduling an appointment days before my arrival to CDMX. I was impressed because this was a pretty late at night over the weekend. They asked me what I was looking for, if I had any ideas, and gave me options for days and times. I shared with them some images of something that I wanted, but I also mentioned that I was open to suggestions. Within minutes of my arrival, I met my assigned artist, Lalo, who was ready with notes and designs based on my thoughts and vision. We spent another hour on top of the time he spent doing the homework on me to finalize the design. From customer service, to quality time, craftsmanship, I couldn’t recommend this place more.

Great experience at Santa María Studio. The studio was clean and welcoming, and Alejandro took time to understand exactly what I wanted. The tattoo came out beautifully with clean lines and great detail. Professional, relaxed vibe — I’d definitely recommend them and would go back again.

Five stars are not enough to give proper credit to Santa Maria Studio. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and their professionalism truly shows in their work. A special thanks to @tapia.ttt, who perfectly embodies the spirit of this studio. Not only is he highly specialized in realism and delivers outstanding work, but he also goes above and beyond expectations. He adjusted his schedule to fit my situation and didn’t hesitate to work 12 hours straight to make sure I could get my tattoo done before leaving Mexico. The result is absolutely amazing. If you’re looking for a friendly, professional studio and a true realism specialist, Santa Maria Studio is the place to go and @tapia.ttt is your guy.

Absolutely, I would give Lalo at Santa Maria Studio a thousand stars if I could! He was absolutely AMAZING! I had planned an short trip to Mexico City and reached out to him just a few days before my arrival. I found him through his fine line tattoos, which is exactly what I was looking for. From the moment I messaged him, his response was extremely fast! Lalo was super attentive, asking for reference photos and providing all the information I needed to feel comfortable. Even though I was arriving late and had a jam-packed weekend with my family, he went above and beyond by scheduling me for an after-hours session on the day I arrived! Not only did he tattoo me, but he also did my husband’s tattoo. I had high expectations based on his profile, but let me tell you—his work was nothing short of phenomenal! I'm already planning to fly back to Mexico just to get more of his incredible art. Five stars just don’t do justice to how amazing he is, both as an artist and as a person! Lalo was so nice, accommodating, and truly attentive to what we wanted. He exceeded every expectation! Gracias, Lalo, por el trabajo tan increíble que hiciste a mi esposo y el mío. Thank you for being so wonderful to us, for staying up late, and making sure we had an unforgettable experience. We truly had an amazing time and so much more!
